1020 meters in 26 minutes Waitangi Day Auckland Harbour Bridge Protest

Year: 2008

Medium: Two-channel video installation, 7 meters x 3 meters, 26min looping cycle

Dual channel video installation - video recordings of the 2008 Waitangi vehicle protest on the Auckland Harbour Bridge. Transit New Zealand decided not to fly the Tino Rangitiratanga flag on Waitangi Day in 2008. A motorcade of vehicles drove at walking pace occupying two lanes of the harbour bridge in protest.

Two bullet-cameras were mounted to a red landrover vehicle in the protest filming a front facing point-of-vew and a rear facing point-of-view simultaneously. The recordings play back in the gallery as a dual-channel projection without cuts.

The red landrover that the dual-channel video art work was made from using covert bullet-cameras was simultaneously documented by TV3, and recordings made of this vehicle and the Tino Rangitiratanga flag featured in the nationally airing TV3 news bulletin that night (see link below).

The LOCAL TIME collective members Danny Butt, Alex Monteith & Natalie Robertson each contributed a protest vehicle & Tino Rangitirtanga flag.
